Poker terms have been used in other settings since the game's origins, used to describe everything from politics to military engagements to life. Donk -A bad player.

You’ve likely heard someone say “poker is an evolving game”, well no play better exemplifies this than the donk bet. Once thought to be a play only used by ‘donks’, hence the term, it’s become a widely accepted strategy, and even an integral part of many top poker player’s winning ways. Donk: (n) Slang form of 'Donkey' It's a poker term used to describe an idiot player. Generally a 'Donk' is someone who doesn't have alot of experience, but thinks they're 'King Shit of Terd Island'. I'm not really a Donk, but when I do something stupid in a tournament (like everyone does) my 'Donkness' comes out.

  • Donk is short for donkey, the pack animal. Donkey was used in chat boxes at online poker rooms because they started censoring the terms ass, jackass etc. So when a player made a play that another thought was out of line and wanted to swear, they just called the player a donkey, and this naturally got shortened to donk.

The poker term 'donk bet' was actually coined relatively recently, only coming into prominence over the last decade or so.

It started out as a somewhat derogatory way of describing a bad play (strategically speaking), although over time the term has been used more generically to describe a specific type of postflop bet.

PokerNews recently caught up with 888Poker Ambassador Dominik Nitsche who offered a quick explanation of donk betting and how the move fits into larger strategic concerns in no-limit hold'em.

As Nitsche explains, a 'donk bet' refers to a postflop bet in which a player who is out of position is 'leading into the preflop aggressor.'

In other words, say a player in late position raises before the flop and another defends the big blind with a call. Then after the flop the player in the big blind leads out with a bet — called a 'donk bet' because (as Nitsche explains) 'usually inexperienced players would do it,' not realizing the importance of position when making that leading bet.

'Typically this is thought of as a bad play, but there's a lot more to it,' explains Nitsche, who goes on to distinguish between situations when leading with a so-called 'donk bet' can actually be a good play and times when it clearly is not. Take a look:

Hold Em Donk, is a player who will take thoughtless random odds on cards they think are good perhaps because they may have a pocket pair, an ace king pocket suit, any suit combination or just think that by going all in on every hand it will eventually pay off. I have played with various players who were at different skill levels, nevertheless would be considered a Hold Em Donk (poker donkey) because they simply think the game is all luck or they don't understand the breakdown of the games odds.
Online gaming sites have made the game much more popular and in my opinion made the problem worse than it was pre 1997. Now many more novice players who take insane risks with play money think that they can take their rip and burn strategy to the real world of poker tournaments. What the average Hold Em Donk fails to realize is that when playing online you likely don't know who you're playing against and don't get to improve your Give (expression, tick, cough, twitch etc) or read other player's give that all professional players pickup on to identify ones potential hand strength. Another problem is that different poker sites use algorithms that don't actually mimic the real life shuffle of the deck or change out. And, when playing someone face to face it is much more intimidating because of factors such as the staredown, having to wager and place physical chips on the pile and the style of the dealer who regulates the table.
